I have been doing yoga for literally years – not only do I get an overall balance, and feel great physically, but it has health benefits for me too. I am lucky enough to be able to practise yoga without having to worry about how I wear my hair, because the front part of my hair that would usually get in the way of my eyes and face is cut back to a blunt fringe, and the rest of my hair is short enough not to become too hot or sweaty or fall in my face.
Long hair can do just that right? I practised when I had long hair, and it just gets in the way! It doesn’t matter how many photos you see circulating the internet of perfectly executed poses with the person with hair loose and looking lovely, in reality we all know that there would be sweat, and maybe tears, but defo random strands of hair all over the place if not literally all over your face… Unless I was at the shoot to fix it just before the camera clicked ;o)
Here is what I would suggest you do with your lovely locks before your yoga practice if you have long hair or a choppy haircut, that could get in the way…
- Wear a top knot, as long as you can achieve this with just a hair band and no grips. It needs to be secure, but you don’t want anything to dig in when you are in certain poses. And you also do not want it to be too tight, as you can create tension.
- Avoid normal Alice bands, as they can easily slide off, leaving you looking for a loose hair accessory whilst trying to breath in downward facing dog. It will probably end up around your neck, leaving your hair back in your face and your focus away from the flow.
- Avoid hard or plastic hair bands, as they can dig in, and if they do fall off will be dangerous – so opt for the zigzag sort. They don’t really dig in, are adjustable and quite flexible.
- Go for a side bun or pigtails, instead of securing hair at the mid or low centre of the head, as you will feel uncomfortable when doing lying down poses.
- French braids are great, as they keep all of your hair neatly tucked away and is quite flat, put it is still better to create the braid to one side instead of down the back.
- Avoid clean hair, especially if you have sleek hair, as your hair tie or band will probably keep sliding off and leaving your hair loose. Damp or greasy hair are good for tying back…. you can always wash it after practice.
- If you do choose to grip your hair away, then the Linziclip (available from Amazon) has a flat surface and it can easily be taken in and out of your hair in-between poses, and is less hassle than a hair tie… so it maybe a good idea to have one in your yoga bag as a back up, along with a zig-zag hair band.
