The Kent Wedding Magazine celebrated its 60th Anniversary Issue and I feel honoured to have had one of my hair-dos on the cover… in fact one of my very favourite hairstyles to create and a very popular style with brides and celebrities… it is the Marcel wave…. modelled by Laura Elliot and shot by Benjamin Toms Photography. The cover image was included as a fellow creative of mine and makeup artist on the shoot Lucy Jayne wrote a featured beauty piece called Timeless Beauty, she talks readers through how they can perfect retro makeup for different eras!

I will be sure to include some how-tos/tutorials of the same styles on future posts – but to get the makeup tutorials you can grab yourself a copy of The Kent Wedding Magazine or head to Lucy’s website.

Styling Shona’s and Lorna’s hair

I love Eastenders don’t you? And how exciting were the Eastenders Live shows last week?… I know! I was on the edge of my seat… then I got a dose of reality because obviously we are dealing with soap opera here! Actors and actresses… but really good ones, so it all seems so real… Anyway, back to hair… I got to style the always stunning Shona McGarty’s hair (Shona plays Whitney), and lovely Lorna Fitzgerald’s hair (Lorna plays Abi)… They looked amazing… very sexy sixties – you know I love my retro! And Shona’s hair was inspired by a Cheryl look – see the photos below.

Eighties Hair inspired by The Wedding Singer

There are lots of aspects of your wedding to consider when planning, including what type of music you are going to choose – will you go for a band? A DJ? Karaoke? Or why not a wedding singer? Maybe you can decide by watching Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore in the romantic comedy set in the eighties called The Wedding Singer – you may have seen it, but it is a fun one to watch on  a girls’ night in – so get your bridesmaids over and be inspired…

Now, I’m all about hair, as you know, so when I watch any movie or TV, I am still always looking at the hair and thinking about the hair… and this particular movie made me think of the style above. It is perfect for anyone who still loves the eighties vibe, the attire and the hair and makeup – but it is not overkill, because going for any retro look, particularly eighties, it has to be done the right way – with subtly or it can look dated… This rocky retro up-do is slightly Madonna-circa-nineteen-eighties edge; it shows off the elegant neck and shoulders area if worn with a strapless dress, and paired with a bit of lace and diamante, the look is perfected. I’d recommend makeup that is in-keeping with the look, but again don’t go over the top – maybe add a bit of sheen, high cheek bones, glitter, or colour. This is a great style for anybody who loved the eighties the first time round, or loves the injection of eighties styles in the noughties… it adds a funky edge to the bride and is perfect if you have a groovy reception planned.

Inspired by the News this week…

I have been so busy this week, and love it! But I have managed to get glimpses of important news this week too… How could I miss the following?!

  • The sad and unexpected death of Peaches Geldof… Like millions of others I am shocked, and my thoughts go out to her friends and family.
  • The Voice is finished, hosted by Emma Willis and Marvin Humes… the winner being Jermaine Jackman.
  • Kate and Wills head to the other side of the world… I used to live and work in Aus, and think it is great!
  • The fact that Kate Moss has been working for forty years now! Amazing!

So like all of you I will have my thoughts on all news including the above… but what I do is hair! So I am using these news pieces as hair-inspiration...

Peaches Geldof has been a queen of style and colour change, and whilst I think she has suited many of her hair choices, my favorite on her was the more recent style, because it has a retro elegance, and looks effortless. It reminds me of some of the red carpet looks I have styled… that fusion of rock-chick, and grooming but with effortlessness, and with Hollywood glamour.

I also loved the rock chick style of Peaches’ mother Paula Yates – and I can see that many modern celebrities are inspired by her look. You can even achieve Paula Yates’ look if you have longer hair… Check out the blonde bombshell video I did for L’Oreal.

Totally loving the super sleek bob that Emma Willis wore at the final of The Voice… she shone and her hair looked in fantastic condition!

When it comes to Kate Middleton’s hair – I love the safe pretty princess look – It is retro too – and has a feel of the classic Wonder Women… So sweet and still sexy – perfect for a princess… but I would really love to style her hair one day!

Lastly, FROM ONE KATE TO THE NEXT… I think it is amazing that Kate Moss has literally been rocking it for forty years in the fashion industry! Talk about icon… And how can I seriously even begin to sum-up all of her hair dos and don’ts over those four decades… but I can tell you one thing that is for sure – she manages to rock any look – long, short, classic, modern, blonde, red, dark, light, shaggy, smooth… Another lady I would love to get my hands on…

What do you say Kate? And Kate?
