Jodie Kidd

I worked with Jodie Kidd last week, and she is absolutely lovely ūüėČ and so was her agent Clare! I was booked to style the supermodel/personality’s hair for a techno event about a drone… So I decided to keep it all very clean and casual, which suits the celebrity mum’s striking features.¬†I opted for a simple pony, but added a Balmain Monaco hair piece, to ensure even more bounce.

Balmain actually sent me hair pieces especially ¬†to gift her… Which she was thrilled with – I don’t blame her… she obviously knows a good product when she sees one. Oh And talking of great products, I also gifted her one of my Batiste dry shampoos.

Check out a previous blog on how to get a gorgeous ponytail similar to what I styled for Jodie Kidd.

Practical Hair for Mums: tutorial!

Not only am I your Hairy Godmother, but I am also a real mother of two gorgeous girls, and up until recently I had my lovely Nana around (she sadly passed away on my birthday in January of this year), and so there was four generations of us… My mother always experiments with her hair, and I love the fact that I get to play with my daughters‚Äô hair ‚Äď they are like my own little dolls to practice on. I wanted to post this up for Mother’s Day last month… but I was super busy sorting my academy, and doing shoots and brides, but I think Mum’s should be celebrated every day!!!

It is important that all mums feel special, and well, you may have heard me say it, or you may have read me write it (you know what I mean), a million times (maybe not that many), but if your hair looks good then you feel great! It is one of the secrets of the universe… It may seem surface, but try it ‚Äď it’s like magic. Being a busy working mum, it is not always easy to keep your hair looking like you have just stepped out of a salon, but here is a look that any mum can achieve super quick each morning before the school run or a day of grocery shopping… so give it a go… But¬†make sure you also¬†treat yourself to a pamper and re-style in a salon every so often ‚Äď because you are worth it!

So the easiest most effective do for busy mums would have to be the pony with a quiff! This is a practical hairstyle that can be done so quickly and has instant impact! It’s great to be able to tie your hair up whilst you’re running about being super mum!!

How to:

  1. Section a triangle section from your temple area and take it back about 2-3 inches towards the crown area.
  2. Isolate this hair away from the back of hair.
  3. Secure the rest of the hair back into a ponytail at the back of head towards your crown area.
  4. Gently back brush the triangle section at the front  to create the quiff, use dry shampoo at root area to help create height and texture whilst back brushing, smooth the top layer of quiff tail using the back brush.
  5. Dress the quiff back towards the base of the ponytail creating as much height as you’d like and then secure with grips.
  6. Now with the ponytail down take a small section of the ponytail from underneath and wrap around to disguise grips and band.
  7. Secure with grips underneath base of ponytail.
  8. Spray with hairspray to secure in place.

Tip: For an extra sparkle try curling the ponytail! Or if your hair is not quite long enough try adding a clip-in pointy tail… Balmain have a great range!

Styling Shona’s and Lorna’s hair

I love Eastenders don’t you? And how exciting were the Eastenders Live shows last week?… I know! I was on the edge of my seat… then I got a dose of reality because obviously we are dealing with soap opera here! Actors and actresses… but really good ones, so¬†it all seems so real… Anyway, back to hair… I got to style the always stunning Shona McGarty’s hair (Shona plays Whitney), and lovely Lorna Fitzgerald’s hair (Lorna plays Abi)… They looked amazing… very sexy sixties – you know I love my retro! And Shona’s hair was inspired by a Cheryl look – see the photos below.

Some Wedding Photos…

I loved working with the fantastic¬†makeup artist Jo Freeman, at the lovely Lucy’s wedding.

Lucy and I opted for a nice, elegant, natural but gorgeous ponytail, to compliment her plunge neckline, and lace dress.

Her bridesmaid also got some Vicki Lord air treatment on Lucy’s special day, with an elegant, neat side bun – I used Balmain clip-ins to make this look even more glamorous.

Nicole demonstrates Grace in Cannes

Get Nicole Kidman’s graceful twisted side ponytail from Grace of Monaco premiere in Cannes.

This week Nicole Kidman has been the brunt of some critical comments on her movie – and well, I guess that is the world of show biz and Hollywood – which she was also reported this week on saying that she would quit for her husband!

I’m no film critic though, and Nicole has always been my favorite copperhead.¬†I could NEVER imagine her being any other colour!

I’m loving the twisted side pony, she wore at Grace of Monaco –¬†Such a simple but elegant look.

Whether you’re going out for a meal and need a simple quick up-do or you are being a bridesmaid and want to look stunning but not out do the bride of course, then this look is perfect!

How to create this style:

What you will need… soft bristle brush, large barrelled tong or large rollers, hair band, hair pins, sectioning clips.

Products: mousse and hairspray.

1) Prep damp hair with a volumizing mouse try bumble and bumbles full form mousse from roots to ends and dry with hair dryer tipping your head upside down starting with root are to dry hair.

2) Once hair is dry, either roll hair in rollers and leave for and hour or so, but if you can’t wait that long use a large barrel tong and clip each curl as you curl the hair. Allow to cool.

3) Remove clips or rollers and back-comb the root area with your soft bristle brush to create as much volume height as you like.

4) Smooth hair with a soft bristle brush, section off the front area that you would like to create the twist at the side and isolate this area away from the hair that is to go into the pony tail.

5) Bring the rest of the hair round to the opposite side and secure into a ponytail just behind the ear.

6) Now twist the isolated hair and bring round the back if the head and pin into the base of the pony tail with the remainder of the twisted hair, wrap it round the base of the ponytail to disguise the hair band. (If you do not have enough of the twisted hair to go around the base of the pony tail, take a section of hair from the ponytail and wrap this hair around to disguise the hair band.

TOP TIP: If your pony tail is not long enough try adding a hairpiece pony tail clip in for that extra length. Balmain have a great one: The Toulouse Monaco create a gorgeous and voluminous ponytail!

Shona McGarty’s Award Bun

Here is the hair I created for Shona McGarty, who plays Whitney Dean in BBC1’s Eastenders, for the British Soap Awards 2012. ¬†This hairstyle works best with long hair, but if you do not have long hair you can still achieve this look by using a ponytail hairpiece to create the bun. To give Shona‚Äôs long hair that extra wow-factor I used a hairpiece as well. ¬†Denman website liked the up-do, I did for Shona, and briefly explain how you can simply create the same look… here is how I did it:

How to rock the look!

You will need:

Heat defence spray, a decent hair spray, a soft bristle brush, a strong snag-free hair band, straightners, hairgrips and fine hairpins.

1)   Make sure hair is pre-washed the night before leaving your hair more pliable and less slippery.

2)   Apply a good heat defence spray all over your hair protecting your luscious locks from the heat appliances.

3)   Straighten hair section-by-section, starting from the nape of your neck upwards, giving the hair a nice polished look.

… backcomb the ponytail

4)   Create a ponytail at the crown of your head. For best results tip your head upside-down and then brush into a tight sleek ponytail tying with a strong snag-free hair band.

5)   If using a hairpiece, secure at the base of the ponytail.

6)   Wrap the ponytail around and around in a clockwise direction gripping the hair to secure in place as you go along.

7)   Use the fine pins in more visual areas like at the front of bun to give more security.

8)   Spray with a good hairspray to secure the look, and voila one sexy show-stopping bun.

Hot Tip: To add a rock chick edge to the bun-style, backcomb the ponytail before you wrap it around.
