The Old Kent Barn

As a bridal hairstylist I spend hours prior to the day of the wedding discussing the bride’s perfect look, trialing out a few options, as well as ordering the necessary accessories and hairpieces… And then it is all about ensuring the bride is happy on the actual wedding day, and it is always a pleasure to arrive at a venue that offers everything I need to make my job easier… The Old Kent Barn is stunning and quaint, and offers a specially design room for the bride to get ready in. This is a lovely environment and almost feels like the set of a movie – with a dressing table, plenty of electrical sockets, and seating. There is also plenty of tea and coffee for everybody, including my favourite, Earl Grey. The staff members are so obliging, not just to the bride herself, but also to the bridal party, and to the suppliers too… So if I need extra lighting, or to have access to the room early to set-up, or any other assistance, somebody is on-hand… Even after I have done my job of creating the bridal hairstyle, I can pack up and a member of staff is on-hand to help carry my heavy equipment to my car. And it is very cool that they have walkie-talkies just to ensure they can communicate with everybody including with me… All of this makes working at this venue a pleasure.

Red on your Wedding Day

When you have been doing bridal hair as long as I have, you get to know about weddings, and one of the things that comes up over and again with my brides is how they can include colour into their day… Red is a fav colour of lots of ladies, but it can be over done, but carefully integrated soft reds paired with deeper shades can add the perfect colour injection to your modern wedding, without making it look too garish with red of course!

  1. Roses: Sprinkle petals on the tables, use petals as confetti, and have edible rose petals as part of your romantic menu.
  2. Ribbons: Tie ribbon in bows to add love and excitement to your invites and favours. Carry the ribbon theme through to chair covers, bouquets, and decor. Using a contrasting shade to the main accent colour avoids the theme looking dated.
  3. Flowers: Deep pink coloured bouquets may work better than full-on red with some themes… carry the colour through to the groom pins, hair accessories, and centrepieces – they will lift classic ivories and creams. Have deeper shades complimenting lighter hues to create depth.
  4. Make-up: Brides can opt for a flawless finish, with high beam shimmer; make the look pop with bright fuchsia kissable lips or a ruby red Hollywood pout to create contrast with softer eye-shadows.
  5. Attire: It is a statement to wear a coloured wedding dress, and many brides still opt for more traditional shades, preferring the theme colour to be worn by bridesmaids, often matching the groom’s cumberband or cravat… but red embroidered detail is popular, or wear a pair of nude Louboutins’ shoes with red soles for a luxury choice that you can wear again.

Blushing Bride

It is my wedding anniversary today – fourteen years married to my very lovely, sexy hubby, and it got me thinking all romantically about what is trending in the world of weddings… So many brides are opting away from white, and are looking for a little colour… and just a hint of pink on a wedding day adds lots of romance… Just a shade glowing with radiance, emulating that flush of subtle crimson that shone across your cheeks when you first fell in love – That same blush that you felt tingle through your body during your first kiss… just that perfect amount of pink… You see, I said I was in a slushy mood ;o)

Some ladies just don’t do pink, but you can embrace a palette of paler shades… it is an ultra romantic choice of theme; with lightweight fabrics, birdcages, candelabras, and soft tones paired with traditional ivories or contrasting dusky blues or muted minks. The whole day will have a floaty, magical vibe, almost as though the event is happening in soft focus.

It is important to get the choice of ‘blush’ accurate otherwise you may end up clashing reds with pinks and corals with purples. To avoid your colours looking wish-washy, ensure you pop some silver, rose gold or crystal into your overall theme; these will lift the paleness, adding depth and glamour. If ‘glitz and glam’ is not your thing, then opt for wild flowers and lots of deep green foliage to balance out the softness of the day. Wild flowers look amazing in the hair, as do sparkly hair accessories, so make sure you bring some thing extra to your hairstyle.

Above is an image of Anna Williamson, a TV presenter… we did this shoot for a cover of a magazine, and this gives inspiration for how colour can be worn subtly on your wedding day, as well as tonal shades of silk flowers in the hair.

This look was created with extra Balmain hair extensions added to Anna’s already lovely locks. Check out more on my bridal website on
